Oaxacan Old Fashioned with Worm Salt Twist
From Oaxaca to your glass — a Don Catrin recipe.
Story
The Old Fashioned is about restraint. Mezcal adds smoke and patience, and the drink feels slower, more deliberate.
A touch of worm salt lifts the bitters and rounds the agave. It’s a quiet detail that makes the drink feel rooted in place.
This is a cocktail for the end of the night, when the room is quiet and the glass is heavy.
Yield: 1 cocktail | Time: 6 minutes
Ingredients
- 2 oz mezcal (or 1.5 oz mezcal + 0.5 oz reposado tequila)
- 1/4 oz agave nectar
- 2 dashes aromatic bitters
- Orange peel
- Worm salt (for rim or garnish)
- Ice
Method
- Stir mezcal, agave, and bitters with ice until chilled.
- Lightly rim half the glass with worm salt.
- Strain over a large cube in a rocks glass.
To Serve
Express orange peel over the drink and garnish. Add a tiny pinch of worm salt on the peel if desired.
Notes & Variations
- Use a touch of chocolate bitters for extra depth.
Ritual
Let the orange oils hit the rim, then sip slowly. This one is made for silence and slow conversation.
